Mechanical Design

Mechanical design (MD) and drafting is one of the broadest and lucrative fields. It is concerned with mechanical engineering that revolves around the application of physical principles for mathematical manufacturing, design, analysis, and maintenance of mechanical systems. MD and drafting also engages its attention with other engineering disciplines, such as Computer Engineering in hardware manufacturing, Engineering in Stress & Strain Analysis, Aeronautical Engineering in Fluid Mechanics, and Electrical Engineering in electronics.

The History of MD

Throughout history, there have been many instances in which man has utilized the discipline of mechanical engineering and designing. In ancient Greece, Heron of Alexandra had created the first steam engine in (1070 AD) that was named Aeolipile. This steam engine followed the principles of engineering and design.

In China, Zhang Heng is known to have invented the seismometer, water clock, and a chariot with gears. These are all contributions that we see up to these days. Additionally, during the years of 7th to 15th century, in the Islamic Golden Age, there were a number of remarkable contributions made by Muslim inventors. One of the most popular of that time was Al-Jazari who presented many MD and even wrote a book related to ingenious mechanical devices way back in 1206.

As you can see, technology has come a long, long way. From the basics of mechanisms, such as the camshaft and crankshaft, engineers have now introduced the most advanced technologies, such as satellites, flying cars, huge airplanes and whatnot.

The Importance of Mechanical Design

Mechanical design and drafting has significantly benefited today's refined engineering and mechanical systems. It allows designers to accurately measure the wear and tear of various systems and machines and increase efficiency. Mechanical designing services also provides an easy interference inspection and layout. Additionally, it even allows for the easy labeling and dimensioning of mechanical systems through the use of various Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software.

Mechanical engineers are constantly pushing themselves to create more efficient, cheaper, and safer mechanical systems and machines. This form of engineering has also given birth to some of the most cutting edge technologies that perhaps could ever be imagined. These include Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Biomechanics, Finite Element Analysis, Nanotechnology, Mechatronics, Composites, Friction Stir Welding (FSW), and Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS).

The Applications of Mechanical Designing

Mechanical designing is applied in a variety of engineering fields. These include:

Mechanical Drawing for Architects - Architects use mechanical design for creating 360-degree views of buildings, 3D Walk/Fly Through, Animations, Photo Realistic Renderings, and 3D still images.
Mechanical Drawing for Engineers - Engineering without mechanical designing is incomplete. Through the use of various tools, mechanical design makes it possible to design complex systems.
Mechanical Drawing in All Fields - Mechanical design is used in IT installations, intelligent building systems, Voice alarm & PA installations, invisible heating solutions, electrical circuit calculations, plant layouts, car layouts, Transformer cabling and installation, lighting calculations, electrical circuit designing, building management systems, and PAT testing and maintenance.
Technology is progressing at a rapid pace. And all of this is owed to mechanical engineers and designers who have remained strong and continue to develop and apply knowledge in order to produce more efficient, qualitative, and safer tools and mechanical systems.
