Overview of rapid prototyping

Objectives

The main objective of rapid prototyping is the manufacture of a physical model (model, prototype, tooling) in a very short time, at a lower cost and with the minimum of tools and intermediate steps in the realization process. .

We can thus, during the development cycle of a product: Hardware prototyping services

  • detect as soon as possible any design problems, without major consequences on the final cost,
  • test alternative solutions (technological choices for the part, processes used to manufacture it, etc.),
  • quickly validate the industrial feasibility of the piece and optimize the forms and the cost of the future tools necessary for its mass production, and thus minimize the risks of modifications during the industrialization,
  • to refine the operational characteristics of the product (mechanical, aerodynamic, aesthetic, ergonomic ...) through full-scale tests on a physical prototype,
  • Have a support object, and thus avoid arbitration of possible conflicts or the parallel development of the process and process elements inherent to each business (obtaining the crude, machining, metrology, assembly, packaging ...) .

Evolutions

  • Rapid Prototyping Rapid

Prototyping is used to quickly validate the design of a new product in the development phase in order to reduce the time to market. The impact of rapid prototyping is the strongest in the first weeks of design, when the changes cost very little.

  • Rapid tooling (rapid tooling or consumable tooling)

The production of pre-production can not be done by rapid prototyping machines for delays and costs. The tooling thus produced is made from several technologies recognized by their specificity such as, for example, metal powder sintering inserts, turning spindles, electroerosion jointing plane,

  • Rapid manufacturing (express manufacturing)

This would be new machines that would use the principle of manufacturing products layer by layer, therefore without special tools, but very quickly for small and medium series. These products would have the good mechanical, chemical and other characteristics without being linked to conventional production methods.

The different types of prototypes
Virtual Proto (or VirtualModel )
* Digital Model (CAD Model): Texture, realistic rendering.
* Numerous simulations (kinematic-mechanical behavior, ...).
* The virtual proto is the basis of the fast prototype ( STL file creation ).

Proto form (appearance, design)
* Necessary for the validation of forms.
* Communication support (geometry, design, aesthetics).
* Objective basis of exchange.

Functional proto (good material)
* Necessary for the validation of the functions of the product (congestion, kinematics, clipping, resistance to the aggressive medium, ...).
* Close to the actual material of the product.

Industrialization (or technological) proto
* Validates the industrialization phase before mass production.
* Prototype true material and close to the process.
* Quantity of the pre-series of some pieces to 1000 pieces.
